Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo is one of the world's best zoos where animals can roam and have a lot of space.

Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo, formerly known as the Singapore Zoological Gardens and commonly known as the Mandai Zoo, covers 28 hectares on the edge of the Upper Seletar Reservoir in the heavily forested central catchment area of Singapore.

The zoo attracts around 1.6 million visitors every year.

From the beginning, the Singapore Zoo followed the modern trend of displaying animals in naturalistic, 'open' exhibitions with hidden barriers, canals and glass between animals and visitors. It houses the largest captive colony of orangutans in the world.

Overview of Singapore Zoo:

On June 27, 1973, the Singapore Zoo opened its doors for the first time with a collection of 270 animals of more than 72 species and 130 employees.

In 1990, 1,600 animals of more than 160 species lived in social groups, housed in 65 landscaped exhibitions with borders that were designed as naturally as possible.

The zoo is no further expanded than the original 28 hectares. Later, however, 40 hectares of secondary forest were developed into the Night Safari.

The remaining undeveloped land has been preserved as wooded land. This and the waters of Upper Seletar Reservoir contribute to the zoo, giving it a feeling of natural, unlimited space.
